Today - sugar is loaded into soft drinks, fruit juices, sports drinks and hidden in almost all processed foods. Now even most infant formulas contain sugar equivalent of one can of Coca Cola!
The more refined sugar you eat, the more you will crave it! According to a research study from the University Bordeaux (France), refined sugar is far more addictive than cocaine.
An astonishing 94 percent of rats who were allowed to choose mutually-exclusively between sugar water and cocaine (one of the most addictive and harmful substances currently known) - choose sugar.
Even rats who were addicted to cocaine quickly switched their preference to sugar, once it was offered as a choice.
High Fructose Corn Syrup, also called Corn Sugar, has been added to almost all processed foods and poses an even greater metabolic risk for your health than refined white table sugar.
Many people in search of a healthy sweetener choose Agave Nectar. Even if it is labeled raw, the Agave Nectar sold in the US is very processed, and it effects the liver metabolism in the same way as High Fructose Corn Syrup due to it’s extremely high fructose content - especially the light colored varieties.
Artificial Sweeteners such as Aspartame, Splenda and Equal, which are often promoted as healthier alternatives than sugar due to their low caloric content, are clearly linked to Alzheimer's and Depression.
If you need to add some extra sweetness, opt for raw honey (sparingly) or the herb stevia. Or just use the natural sweetness of fresh berries.
"Dr. Weston-Price, who in 1935 studied isolated populations on native diets, was continually struck by the contrast of native sturdiness and good health with the degeneration found in the local white population living off the 'displacing foods of modern commerce' such as refined sugar, white flour, white rice and canned foods.
Once these isolated populations began to include refined carbohydrates, they started to experience obesity, heart disease and diabetes. Their off spring showed physical degeneration: either thin or overweight, narrow faces and crooked teeth."
Other health consequences such as suppression of the immune system, free radical tissue damage, hyperactivity, liver and kidney diseases have been shown to have a direct link to the consumption of refined carbohydrates.
Enjoy Unrefined, Whole Foods ;-)
